Inscriptions by Janamejaya (4)

During the British rule in India, a British officer named Lewis Rice collected numerous inscriptions from the Mysore region and catalogued them as the Mysore Inscriptions. Among them was the Janamejaya Dana Shasana, discovered at Tirthahalli village in the present-day Shivamogga (Shimoga) district. The inscription is written in Sanskrit. It records that the event took place in the 89th year of the Kali Yuga, in the Plavanga year, which corresponds to 3013 BCE according to the chronology mentioned in the inscription. The inscription contains the following statements:

“Swasti Sree Jayaabhyudaya Yudhi-sthira sake Plavangaakhye Ekonanavati vatsare sahasya maase Amavaasyaayaam Somavaasare SriMan Mahaaraa jaadhiraaja Parameswara Vaiyagrani vyaghrapada gotrajah” This inscription is on a copper plate Indian Anti quary (333.1.334). Sree Kurukula-vatamsa Sree Janamejaya Bhoopalanam Danasasanapatram:

पान्तु वो जलदश्यामाः शार्ङ्गज्याघातकर्कशाः ।

त्रैलोक्यमण्डपस्तम्भाश्चत्वारो हरिबाहवः ॥

This stanza means praise to Lord Vishnu and it is in the beginning of the inscription. This was brought into light by Dr. E. Veda-Vyasa, I.A.S. Ph.D, D.Litt in his thesis on the Date of Mahabharata. He also proved that a foreigner named kolebrook made strong attempts to devaluate the inscrip tion. Dr.E. Vedavyasa described Vthe futile attempts of kolebrook and established that the inscription is authentic (5)

It is clear that foreigners could not accept the antiquity of Indian History. Dr. E Vedavyasa disclosed this fact earlier than 1990 – Even then it is very strange that our Historians neglected this vital point. Begur Copper inscription mentions that during the expedition by Janamejaya to Conquer Southern region, he donated land on the vyatipatayoga in the fortnight after full moon of the month of Chaitra. Sorab copper inscription contains the fact of offering Land to the residents of pushpagadda Agrahara. This was recorded in the Indian Antiquary in 1901. The inscription of the donation of Tadinallu 70 to the residents named Bouravasis was recorded on the 3rd day of the fortnight after Full Moon in the Month of Vaisakha, having Visakha nakshatra on monday in Vyatipatayoga. The copper inscription in Anantapur consists of the donation offered to the residents of Gautamagrama (Village named after Goutama). All these are related to Janamejaya.
